hour. and a sad update on a uc davis student who has been missing for more than a month. . good morning, everyone. welcome to mornings on 2. it is saturday, september 8th. i'm mike mibach. >> i'm claudine wong. cool start to the weekend. let's check the forecast with rosemary. >> good morning to you. for most, it is going to be another nice day. we are waking up a little cool. patchy clouds reaching across the bay this morning. the afternoon seabreeze will be with us. our high for today, 60s at the coast, 70s around the bay, 90s for the hottest spots. i'll show you the numbers outside your door at this hour and what you can expect for the afternoon, coming up. two children kidnapped by their father have been rescued, after spending three days on a stolen yacht. ktvus allie rasmus is live in alameda, where their father stole the boat and took them out to sea. >> reporter: that's right. the boat used in this apparent child abduction was stolen from

this harbor, bolina bay in alameda. this is video of the mother and her two kids, being driven back to safety by san francisco police. the children's father, 42-year-old christopher maffei is accused of kidnapping the two children from their mother's south san francisco home earlier this week. he then stole this boat from the alameda harbor and took off with his two small children on board heading south. last night around 7:30, u.s. coastguard, police and even the fbi were involved in the search and were able to locate the boat off the coast near monterrey. authorities say they had to approach maffei very carefully because they weren't sure how the father would react. >> we asked him -- we wanted to provide him with water and a radio so that we could, so that we could have a conversation with him. and at that point, he said that he was willing to help us in any way that he could and we asked if we could put a boarding team on board. and he said that would be fine. >> reporter: at that point,

police were able to board the boat and rescue the two children. coastguard commander don montoro says maffei was cooperative and did not resist arrest. no one was hurt in the rescue operation. maffei was taken into custody, where he could face kidnapping and theft charges. back here live at the bay, we don't know at what point the boat involved in the kidnapping will be brought back here and returned to the owner. we're told it is still in monterrey at the coastguard station there, being impounded as evidence. live in alameda, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2news. vice presidential nominee paul ryan is in danville right now, getting ready for his first campaign event starting in about an hour. ryan is attending a breakfast fund-raiser. tickets for the event cost $1000 with club mitt members asked to pay 5000. later this afternoon, he'll head over to google headquarters where he'll do an online hangout

with campaign offices in wisconsin, virginia and florida. campaign democrats are surprised to see ryan in, quote, democratic country, so soon after the democratic convention. yesterday, republican presidential candidate mitt romney told supporters how disappointed he was in president obama's speech at the convention. at a rally in new hampshire, romney discussed the obama administration and what he called the failed economic policies of the last few years. he said president obama made nothing but more empty promises during his speech. well, today, president obama is in florida for a two-day bus tour, but earlier this morning, he took a break from the campaign trail to discuss this week's somber anniversary of september 11th. >> we are one american family. we look out for each other. not just on the difficult days, but every day. 11 years later, that's the legacy of 9/11, the ability to say with confidence that no adversary and no act of terrorism can change who we are.

>> president obama is going to mark the anniversary with a series of events in and near washington, dc. it will begin with a moment of silence on the white house lawn. well, as the anniversary of september 11th approaches, americans say they feel safer now than in previous years. and many say they no longer wake up every morning fearing another terror attack. coming up at 7:17, one of the main reasons for this sense of security and what most people now think about extra airport security. a body found near the american river in sacramento has been identified as that of a missing uc davis student. linnea lomax has been missing for 10 weeks. a search team found the 19-year-old's remains yesterday morning in a wooded area near glenn hall park, not far from where she was last seen at a counseling session. her parents say she suffered a mental breakdown while studying for finals. exactly how she died is still under investigation. friends of a missing cal

polystudent are heading to chico today, joining the search for brett olson. the 20-year-old from the bay area vanished on sunday after tubing on the sacramento river with friends from chico state. he was last seen at beer can beach. olson's father says he is an experienced swimmer and a certified lifeguard. >> i think he's alive. i don't, i don't know the circumstances and that's what we're trying to find out. >> we're just hoping that he's out there safe and sound and we're going to bring him home. [ cheers & applause ] >> olson's friends spread word about his disappearance at a football game at his hometown of lafayette yesterday. they also held a fund-raiser at casa burrito, where olson worked. there is also a facebook page dedicated to finding olson. an 18-year-old brentwood man was shot last night at a well known pittsburgh park, just after 6:00 p.m. at buchanon park.

police say the victim was with a group of people that was approached by at least two other males. police say words were exchanged. then one person pulled out a gun and fired into the victim's back. officers say they believe the victim and the suspect knew each other. there is still no word on the name or age of the victim. well, support is continuing to pour in for the family of california highway patrol officer kenyon youngstrom killed in the line of duty. the owners of this indoor trampoline park say they will donate all of tomorrow's proceeds to young strom's wife and four children. the 37-year-old died wednesday, one day after being shot during a traffic stop. the 100 club of contra costa county is also pledging help for the family and offers money, scholarships and support to the families of fallen peace officers and firefighters in the county. >> we're here for you, if you need anything, you call us, we'll be there. >> the 100 club has already handed the youngstrom family $15,000. other businesses in the community say they plan to help

the family by holding a silent auction. two wildfires continue to grow this morning. the fires have burned 17,000 acres, burning near the town of williams. an indian reservation has been evacuated as the fire continues to threaten more than 20 homes. crews are working to contain the fire, but heat is not working in their favor. it is 35% contained right now. firefighters in southern california continue to make progress on a wildfire burning in the san gabriel mountains north of los angeles, but people are being advised to stay away for another weekend. the fire forced closures over the labor day weekend and right now it is 78% contained. the fire has burned nearly 4200 acres. twelve firefighters have suffered minor injuries. walking out to the car this morning, definitely crisp out there. almost feels that someone flipped a switch and said fall, here we go. >> feeling like it, right? >> yeah. >> the nights are a little

longer, mornings a little cooler. slipping into the 40s for north bay valley locations. most of us in the 50s. mostly clear skies over most of the region, although just a few fingers of fog drifting across the bay, into the east bay. oakland, hayward reporting partly to mostly cloudy skies. but beautiful look at the sunrise there. we will be mostly clear. today, a near repeat of what we felt yesterday. hopefully you enjoyed your yesterday and the weather a lot like what we felt. 15 miles per hour right now at sfo, 18 in fairfield. the onshore breeze was a little stronger through fairfield early this morning, has backed off just a little bit. 57 degrees fairfield, 59 at antioch, 56 in livermore. widespread 50s around the bay. this is where we're talking about, slipping into the upper 40s in some of our valley spots, right along the north bay stretch. but santa rosa, seeing a rebound, 52 at this hour, slipping back into the upper 40s earlier this morning. low pressure off the coast, going to continue the onshore

coast from pacifica down into half moon bay. your extended forecast, tomorrow will be cooler. clouds, a little thicker. monday, we rebound and temperatures soar back to the seasonal average by tuesday and wednesday. if you're headed to the beaches, northwesterly flow will be producing rip currents for some areas of monterrey bay. i'll take a look at that, coming up. well, social media threats against the president. the 16-year-old girl now in trouble for what she tweeted. the seven words that got the attention of the feds. >> and a new state law to prevent stadium violence. what venue operators will now be required to do to improve their response to problems. >> but first, let's take you outside. there is a live look at the east shore freeway this morning. things looking good right on that stretch of freeway, but the highway patrol is clearing an accident on westbound 80 near hilltop drive. there's reports of debris in the roadway. apparently at least six different vehicles hit that debris. they are all on the right shoulder, but you want to keep an eye out if you're headed in that direction. it is 7:11. you're watching mornings on 2.

. good morning to you. a bird's eye view over lafayette this morning and the aren today area. mostly closer skies, a haze, air quality is good and a pleasant day in store. the contra costa county sheriff's department is looking for an 18-year-old man accused of shooting another teenager in bay point on thursday. daniel costano is wanted for the death of 17-year-old fernando martinez. investigators say gonzalez was sitting in a car near shore acres elementary school when he was shot and killed. the shooting prompt add shelter in place for that neighborhood that includes two schools and a day care. new york city police are investigating the death of a store clerk who was accidentally shot and killed by one of their officers. the incident happened while police were responding to a robbery at the store yesterday.

officers say the 20-year-old man was fleeing from the suspects and ran right into an officer who fired his gun. all three of the alleged robbers were arrested. police say a love triangle is responsible for an explosive scare that ended with a man being taken off a plane at gunpoint. kenneth smith, jr. is accused of calling police and saying another man, christopher shell, was on board a plane with liquid explosives. the plane was ordered back to philadelphia and shell was removed. shell is the ex-boyfriend of smith's current girlfriend. police say smith was angry over a picture shell had posted of the woman on facebook. >> always in the wrong place at the wrong time and, i mean, it may not even have anything to do with him at all. seems like he gets in the middle of something. just, you know, ends up being chaotic. >> smith has been charged with conveying false information that interfered with aviation. if convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

new this morning, at least six people are dead after a suicide bombing near nato headquarters. officials say five other people were seriously injured in the attack in central kabul. the attack happened as afghans honored the 11th anniversary of the death of ahmad masud, killed in an al-qaeda suicide bombing two days before the september 11th attacks and he was part of an alliance working to overthrow the taliban and al-qaeda. another man has been arrested in the murder of a border patrol agent, which touched off the operation fast and furious scandal. the man was caught in mexico and he is one of the five men charged with killing brian terry in a december 2010 shootout. guns found at that scene came from a gun smuggling ring that was being watched as part of operation fast & furious. the secret service is investigating a tweet from a 16-year-old girl considered a threat toward president obama. on thursday night, officers say alyssa douglas of ohio tweeted that someone needed to assassinate the president.

the tweet quickly went viral and was reported to the fbi and cia. a man in north carolina is now facing charges after he tweeted he was going to take the life of the president. well, as the anniversary of 9/11 approaches, most americans say they feel safer now compared to four years ago when president obama first took office. most of those polled say they no longer worry every day about another terror attack and that the additional security at airports has become a regular part of traveling. people also say they feel many terror networks have been impacted, especially with the death of osama bin laden. a display in west sacramento is honoring one of the worst terror attacks in u.s. history. at the corner of south river boulevard and jefferson are thousands of u.s. flags, one for each life lost on september 11th. john vinh sent put the display together and says the day impacted everyone across the country. >> i just think it's really important that people remember what happened that day and, you know, to realize that freedom

isn't free. >> he says the display is a place people can come to remember loved ones they lost or reflect on the day. he says he hopes his work is a reminder of th endurance of the american people. the muslim community is inviting americans to donate blood in honor of the victims this weekend. the muslim community of silicon valley is hosting the american red cross blood drive today in milpitas. it runs from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 this afternoon a that drive is part of the muslims for life campaign, a project aimed at serving the community and protecting the sanctity of life. the recent bankruptcy of the city of stockton is challenging the belief that employees are guaranteed their pension benefits. with stockton's recent chapter 9 filing, government employee pension payments are not a priority, or two bond insurance seem to think. the bond insurance companies demand that city tax dollars go to them first, to pay back city debt before the public pension system. stockton city officials are

saying municipal employees who have already suffered enough through pay cuts and layoffs. superior court judge in sacramento ruled yesterday that former governor arnold schwarzenegger did not break laws when he reduced the prison sentence of a colleague's son as one of his final acts in office. esteban nunez is the son of fabbian nunez. his sentence was reduced from 16 years to 7 years at schwarzenegger's request. the judge called the reduce to reduce the sentence repugnant, but says schwarzenegger had the authority under his executive powers. san mateo county's district attorney is joining a push for more executions at san quintin. executions have been put onrly n years now, over questions regarding the state's three drug execution effort. voters will decide whether to keep or abolish the death penalty through proposition 34. there is now a state law to help fan violence at pro sports

arenas. the governor signed a violence prevention bill yesterday. often, stadium security can respond to potentially violent situations faster than police who are dispatched through 911 calls. well, oakland's own boxing champion, andre ward, will defend his supermiddle weight belt tonight in oakland, in a match that is going to be broadcast worldwide. the fight's promotetors and hbo all agreed with ward's idea to have this internationally watched fight in oakland. ward told ktvu why he pushed to have the fight here. >> me fighting at home is as much for the fans as it is for me. it's a treat for the fans, something positive going on in the city. >> ward says he's proud the fight is bringing attention to oakland. the 28-year-old olympic gold medalist is undefeated. his opponent has the advantage in height, weight and reach, but ward says he's got what it takes

. emergency supplies are starting to arrive to areas of southern china where multiple earthquakes struck yesterday. 80 people are now confirmed dead and more than 100,000 were forced out of their homes. the government has set up 200 tents for shelter and sent food and drinking water to the disaster zones. the earthquakes range from a 4.8 to a 5.6 magnitude.

cleanup begins this morning after a deadly storm hits parts of oklahoma yesterday. four people died in that storm. one couple, along with their granddaughter, were killed after strong winds and rains ripped through the state, destroying their house. another person was killed when hurricane force winds flipped a semi truck onto a concrete barrier wall and pinned the driver inside for nearly 3 hours. a tour of damage in louisiana shows there's still a lot left to do, 10 days after hurricane isaac. highway 23 remains flooded in lower plaquemines parish. generators are being trucked in because electricity is still out. heavy equipment is moving debris from the storm surge and crews are hauling out hundreds of animal carcasses before mosquitoes begin swarming and spreading disease. the stench from the dead animals and piled-up trash is the latest ripple effect of hurricane isaac and it can be smelled across the city. mountains of garbage and storm debris are piled up along the city streets. the storm delayed trash pickup in many parts of the city.

new orleans hopes to be caught up with all the trash collection by tomorrow. time now, 7:24. if you're just waking up, good morning, and let's check in with rosemary to take a look at the forecast. good morning. >> good morning to you. quite a beautiful start this morning. most of us waking up with mostly clear skies. disorganized marine layer crossing over the bay, into parts of the east bay this morning. santa rosa reporting a little fog that has developed and it's actually causing visibility issue. three quarters of a mile visibility in some cases through santa rosa. headed to the beach this weekend? well, a northwesterly flow will be capable of producing strong rip currents in areas of monterrey, right there along the bay. that will be through sunday. meanwhile, around the bay, temperatures in the 60s and mid-70s for some areas like fremont, redwood city, 76. 79 down into san jose. and as you get farther inland, it's going to feel pretty good. if you're still hoping for a little bit of summer that is left, 88 in antioch today.

back at home, after a frightening ordeal out at sea, the happy reunion between a mother and her two young children. welcome back to mornings on 2, i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. two children kidnapped by their father and taken to sea for three days on a stolen i can't tell yacht are back with their mother this morning. the coast guard found the yacht off the monterey peninsula. crew members recovered the children and arrested christopher maffei. >> i'm glad to say it's come to a appearsful conclusion. there were no injuries and it was -- peaceful conclusion. it was resolved. >> we quickly got brook line off the boat and transferred her to the hospital.

>> christopher maffei abducted his children tuesday afternoon and drove them to alameda where he stole a yacht named unleashed and said off with the children. a fishing boat spotted the yacht and called the coast guard and they tracked that yacht until crews could get there by boat. police are working to identify the remains of a female body, the hiker reported seeing the remains yesterday morning off canyon road in the area of aromos. this is a half mile from highway 101. this the video of where that body was found. santa clara deputies are part of this investigation. they brought in a ci team to search the area around the body for additional evidence. detectives are considering the crime to be a homicide. they say the remains are not those of sierra lamar who has

been missing since march. volunteers in morgan hill continue to search for lamar. registration at burnett elementary school begins at 8 this morning. people 18 and older are asked to come help search for signs of the missing teenager. back in may 21-year-old torres was arrested for her kidnapping and murder. he has yet to enter a plea. san jose are looking for the carjackers who mowed down an elderly woman with her car. this is a surveillance video from august 25th which shows a man walking up to a gray suv in the shopping center at the silver creek road in east capital parkway area. he held a knife to the 70-year- old driver's throat, forced her out and hits her as he drives off. she fell and was hurt but is recovering. the suspect had a partner. both are african-american in their mid-20s and they were wearing dark clothing. we are getting a different

version of a fatal shooting. 21-year-old joe johnson talked to ktvu from his hospital bed in walnut creek. johnson said he and his friend 23-year-old mario were never a threat to police. police say romero got out of a car and got a gun from his waistband. >> he realized that he wasn't going to make it, so he wanted to protect me from the rest of the bullets entering me so i could still survive. >> police say the gun they saw turned out to be a pellet gun. johnson says none of that is true either and may have to investigate what really happened. >> tomorrow marks the second anniversary of the pipeline explosion. there will be a memorial to mark the somber event.

survivors gathered at the blast site tuesday who was sponsoring three bills aimed at up dating the pipelines. 8 people were killed. police arrested a 37-year- old man in connection with with a series of suspicious fires. julio was arrested after a grass fire broke out. a witness told police he saw marcia start that fire as well as another one. he's suspected of starting two other fires last week. he was booked on three counts of arson. a protest caused quite a scene at the museum in san francisco. more than a hundred union members took over the museum lobby last night to argue the museum's make good money and managers are getting raises while employees struggle to pay health care costs. 19 were arrested for blocking the doors. employees from the palace of

fine arts have been negotiating a contract for the past year. >> we're not making a ton of money. we are skilled workers. >> this union is sitting on the best contract offer that any city union has received in probably 20 years. >> museum spokesman ken garcia says museum is offering workers 12% wage increase over three years and insists that is 3 times what other unions have settled for. >> plans to rebuild and expand a safeway in oakland has some residents angry about the projected size of the update. a rock ridge safeway on college avenue is approved to become a two story, 50,000 square foot building on the outside perimeter, another 10,000 square feet of retail, a neighborhood nonprofit is fighting the plan saying it wants something smaller. >> don't build a 15,000 square foot monstrosity. if you bring it down, you don't

have the traffic impacts anymore. >> the neighborhood group appealed the oakland planning commission's decision to let safeway expand and plans on suing safeway if the appeal is denied. it's now in the hands of oakland city council and they will have to decide whether or not to go ahead with that project. >> we have aban on plastic bags and now they are facings push back from those who make the plastic shopping bags. save the plastic bag coalition filed a lawsuit argued that prohibiting plastic bags including paper and reusable bag production causing negative environmental impacts. bag makers want the ban reviewed and fees charged for paper bags raised from 10-cents to a inquirier; a second yosemite camp is going to stay open despite a link to the

virus. one visitor was sickened by the hantavirus. they're warning 6000 visitors about possible exposure to that virus. seven other cases including three deaths have been linked to a group of tent cabins at curry village which are on the valley floor. texas is also dealing with a case of the hantavirus but this is related to a popular reality show. a woman contacted the virus while helping cleaning a house on hording. there are concerns that books were removed from it and donated to a library, those books have been lent out. the virus is contracted through the droppings of the infected rodents: day two of susan b coe men day is getting ready, more than a thousand people eventually made their way to san francisco. the national organization came

just enough to bring partly to mostly cloudy skies to parts oftest bay and over-- of the east bay and over the city. mostly sunny skies in the forecast for your afternoon. we remain with the same two features we have been dealing with, a ridge of high pressure to the east and a low off the coast for today. the high pressure is going to control our pattern just a little bit more. by sunday it will be the trough off the coast that nudges our way and brings us a cooler day. in a nutshell, nice looking weekend with warmer temperatures expected for your saturday, anywhere from 3 to 5 degrees of cooling expected for sunday. into the afternoon, a low 60s around the coast and along the peninsula. we're looking at 70s around the bay, 80s for our warmer spots and some areas well inland like brentwood expected to get to 90 for the afternoon. tomorrow we'll wake up with the marine layer a little deeper and on shore breeze a little stronger and temperatures will be cooler for the afternoon.

57 in fairfield, 56 in concord, widespread 50s around the bay area and if we head north a little cooler over the north bay, upper 40s to low 50s. visibility down to 3/4 of a mile. it's patchy. if you have an early morning drive take it easy. you may experience clear skies and that lull of fog may come quickly. your temperatures will begin to warm with mostly sunny skies already this morning. for the afternoon 60s along the peninsula as well as the east bay widespread 70s so a pleasant noontime and for the afternoon here's a look at your highs, 79 santa rosa, 76 for san rapel, again touching 90 degrees in brentwood. 79 for san jose today. 68 in santa cruz if you're headed to the board walk.

on 73rd avenue. the victim was shot outside thing and transported to the hospital with unknown injuries. oakland police are investigating a shooting near the eastmont mall last night. a man in his 60s was shot in the chest and taken to highland hospital where he did undergo surgery. the gunman is said to be a young person, possibly a teenager who fired the gun from a nearby bus stop. >> police are working to identify the remains of a female body found in san benito county. a hiker reported seeing the remains off cannon road. this is half a mile from highway 101. this is video from news chopper 2 where that body was found. yesterday they brought in a csi team to search the area around the body for any additional evidence. investigators are considering this a homicide but say the

remains are not those of sierra lamar who has been missing from morgan hill since march. volunteers are continuing the search for lamar. registration at the elementary school began at about 8:00 this morning. people 18 and older are asked to come and help with the search and see if there's any signs of the missing teenager. in may, an ton torres was arrested for the kidnapping and murder. he has yet to enter a plea. san jose police are looking for two people who stole an elderly woman's car and hit her as they drove away. this surveillance video from august 21st shows a man walking up to a gray suv in the shopping center at east capitol parkway. he held a knife to the 70-year- old drivers throat, and drove away hitting her. you see on the ground there.

bay point thursday. daniel postano is wanted for the death of 17-year-old fernando gonzalez of martinez. investigators say gonzalez was sitting in a car near shore acres elementary school when he was shot and killed. that shooting prompted a shelter in place for the neighborhood, which includes two schools and a day care. well, support is continuing to pour in for the family of california highway patrol officer kenyon youngstrom, killed in the line of duty. the owners of jump highway and indoor trampoline park in fairfield say they will donate all of tomorrow's proceeds to youngstrom's wife and four children. the 37-year-old died wednesday, one day after being shot during a traffic stop. the 100 club of contra costa county is also pledging help to the family. it offers money, scholarships and support to the families of fallen peace officers and firefighters in the county. >> hey, we're here for you, if you need anything, call us and we're going to be there. >> the 100 club has already handed the youngstrom family $15,000. other businesses in the

community say they plan to help the family by holding a silent auction. two wildfires continue to grow this morning. the fires have already burned nearly 17,000 acres and they are burning now near the town of williams. an indian reservation has been evacuated, as that fire continues to threaten more than 20 homes. crews are working to contain that fire, but the steep terrain just isn't making it easy. right now, it is 35% contained. another fire in lake county broke out yesterday afternoon. that's burning west of scott valley road on cal mountain and mandatory evacuations are in effect for the blue lakes area. officials say 16,000 acres are burned and it is only 5% contained. we'll keep you updated as we get more information on that fire. firefighters in southern california also continue to make progress on a wildfire burning in the san gabriel mountains, which is north of los angeles. but people are still being advised to stay away for at

the lower plaquemines parish. generators are being trucked in because electricity is still out in some areas. heavy equipment is moving debris from the storm surge and crews are hauling out hundreds of animal carcasses before mosquitoes begin swarming and spreading disease. the stench from dead animals and piled-up trash is the latest ripple effect of hurricane isaac and it can be smelled across new orleans. mountains of garbage and storm debris are piled along the city streets. the storm delayed trash pickup in many parts of the city, but new orleans officials are saying that they hope to be caught up with trash collection by tomorrow. plans to expand a safeway in oakland has some residents up in arms about the projected size of the update. the rock ridge safeway on college avenue is approved to become a two-story, 50,000-square foot building. on the outside perimeter, another 10,000 square feet of retail. the rock ridge community planning council and neighborhood nonprofit is fighting the plan, saying it wants something smaller and says it plans on suing safeway if its

appeal is denied. the project is now in the hands of the oakland city council. it will have to decide whether to give the project a green light. well, there's now a state law to help prevent fan violence at pro sports stadiums and arenas. governor jerry brown signed the stadium violence prevention act yesterday. stadium operators must clearly post phone numbers for security around the venue. it's designed to increase response times because often stadium security can respond to potentially violent situations faster than police, who are dispatched through 911 calls. well, oakland's own boxing champion andre ward will defend his supermiddle weight belt tonight in oakland, in a match that will be broadcast worldwide. the fight's promoters and hbo all agreed with ward's idea to have this internationally watched fight in oakland. ward is proud that the fight is bringing attention to the city. the 28-year-old olympic gold medalist is undefeated and his opponent has the advantage in height, weight and reach, but ward says he's got what it takes

let them go. lot of smiles this morning after a terrifying three days for one bay area family. welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm mike mibach. >> i'm claudine wong. here's a look at some of the top stories we're following this morning. two children kidnapped by their father in south san francisco and taken out to sea for three days on a stolen yacht are back with their mother this morning. they were reunited last night in monterrey. the father of those children, now under arrest. well, vice presidential nominee paul ryan is in danville right now. he is attending a breakfast fund-raiser at the home of former 49ers tight end brent jones. and later this afternoon, he'll head over to google headquarters. people continue to show their support for the family of a california highway patrol officer killed in the line of duty. kenyon youngstrom was shot and killed wednesday during a routine traffic stop. the owners of an indoor trampoline park called jump highway in fairfield say they will donate all of tomorrow's proceeds to his family. this morning, police are working to identify the remains

of a female body. a hiker reported seeing the remains yesterday morning off canyon road in the area of arrow mass. this is about half mile from highway 101. here is video from news chopper 2 of where exactly that body was found. santa clara county sheriff deputies are also part of this investigation. yesterday, the department brought in a cs i-team to search the area around the body for any additional evidence. investigators are considering this a homicide. they also say the remains are not those of sierra lamar, who has been missing from morgan hill since march. meanwhile, volunteers in morgan hill continue to search for lamar. registration began this morning at 8:00. people 18 and older are searching areas based on tips from police for signs of the missing teenager. in may, 21-year-old antolin garcia-torres was arrested for lamar's kidnapping and murder. he has yet to enter a plea. san jose police are looking for the car jackers who mowed down an elderly woman with her

own car. showing you the surveillance video, take a look at the top part of your screen. this is from august 25th. it shows a man walking to a gray suv in the shopping center at silver creek road and east capital parkway. police say he held a knife to the 70-year-old driver's throat, forced her out, then watch here as he hits her with the suv, as he drives off. now, she fell and was hurt, but we are told she is recovering. police say the suspect had a partner. both are african american, in their mid twenties, who were wearing dark clothing. well, only on 2, we're now being told a different version of the fatal police shooting in vallejo that left one man dead and another wounded. 21-year-old joe johnson talked to us from his hospital bed in walnut creek. johnson said he and his friend, 23-year-old mario romero were never a threat to police. police say romero got out of the car and reached for a gun in his waist band, but johnson says the only move romero made was to lean over and shield him. >> he realized that he wasn't

going to make it. so he wanted, he wanted to protect me from the rest of the bullets entering me so i could still survive. >> police say the gun they saw turned out to be a pellet gun. they did find drugs in the car, but johnson says none of that is true. he now has an attorney and his attorney wants the u.s. department of justice to investigate. tomorrow marks the second anniversary of the deadly san bruno pipeline explosion. there will be a memorial ceremony at is not bruneau city park at 5:00 tomorrow. on tuesday, survivors gathered at the blast site with assemblyman jerry hill, sponsoring three bills aimed at upgrading pipeline oversite. eight people died, dozens were injured, and 38 homes were destroyed in the 2010 explosion. well, police arrested a 37-year-old man in connection with the series of suspicious fires in east san rafael. julio cesar santa maria was arrested after a grass fire broke out. a witness told police he saw the

suspect start the fire, as well as another wan. he's also suspected of starting two other fires last week. he is booked on three counts of arson. a protest caused quite a scene at the deyoung museum in san francisco. >> we've got the power! >> more than a hundred union members took over the museum lobby last night. they argue that the museums make good money and that managers are getting raises, while employees are struggling to pay for healthcare. 19 protesters did get arrested for blocking the doors. employees from the deyoung and the palace of fine arts have been negotiating a contract for the past year. >> we're nonprofit workers, not making a ton of money anyway. we live in an expensive city. we are skilled workers. >> this union is sitting on the best contract offer that any city union has received in probably 20 years. >> spokesman ken garcia says the museum is offering workers up to a 12% wage increase over three years and insists that is three times what other san francisco

unions have settled for. there is another contract negotiation scheduled for monday. the grass fire kept firefighters in san jose busy overnight. the fire was in the area of story road and remillard court, reported just before 10:30 last night. san jose firefighters had a tough time getting to the fire at first, but were able to contain it overnight. a shell refinery in martinez is performing maintenance work today. officials don't want you to be alarmed if you see smoke. crews will be testing flares at the refinery. sometimes the testing can cause occasional smoke emissions and authorities want you to be aware that everything is under control. testing will last through the weekend. well, police say this week they mistakenly warned residents that potential burglars were posing as pg&e workers. authorities were first alerted of suspicious activity back on august 28th when residents on poppy drive and drake avenue report add man checking gas at

their homes. following an investigation, burlingame police say the man in question were in fact legitimate contractors working for pg&e. according to the l.a. times, park officials have decide that high sierra camps will remain open, even though one visitor who stayed there was sickened by the hantavirus. park officials say they are warning 6000 visitors who stayed at high sierra camps about possible exposure. there have been seven other cases of hantavirus, including three deaths linked to a group of tent cabins incur re village, on the valley floor. well, in texas, they are also dealing with the case of the hantavirus, but this one is related to a popular reality show. the centers for disease control say a woman contracted the illness while helping clean a house for the discovery series "hoarding." the home is now under quarantine, but there is concern because there were books removed from the house, donated to the

at this breakfast fund-raiser. he spoke to a group of supporters. it was just before 9:00 when the motorcade pulled up in the driveway of this danville home. brian stepped out and was greeted by the host of this fund-raiser, former 49 years tight end brent jones and his wife. some supporters paid $1000 a plate to hear ryan speak. other supporters who wanted to personally meet ryan and take a picture with him made a $10,000 contribution. now, if we take you back out here live, we can see the vice presidential nominee making his way out of this home. he's getting into the suv, so they are preparing to clear the area, clear the street so he can leave. we talked to neighbors in the area this morning. there are a lot of cars parked out here. again, there are about a hundred people at least attending this event. so you can imagine, the traffic that it caused on this street. we asked some of the residents around here what they thought about this political fund-raiser happening in their neighborhood and they had mixed feelings

a pregnant woman and her boyfriend were targeted by gunmen. police say 28-year-old ashley mills and 31-year-old deshon jones were killed in their home by two men. witnesses say they saw the men in hooded sweat hirt running from the house after the shooting. police are trying to confirm the multiple reports that mills was pregnant with twins, but they are proceeding as if there are four victims in the case. the teen accused of hitting and killing a concord family, 17-year-old david rosen, will change his plea. he is accused of hitting a father and his 9-year-old daughter on a morning bike ride back in april. prosecutors say he was speeding and lost control of his car. rosen pled not vehicle to vehicular manslaughter charges last month, but is scheduled to be back in court later this month. palo alto police are investigating 17 car burglaries. it all happened in just two days. the incidents were reported at the stanford shopping center and forest city parking facilities. police have descriptions of the suspects, but are not releasing them because there are several

different versions. they do say it appears the suspects are targeting rental cars and stealing electronic equipment. a nevada teenager kidnapped last week is now talking about what happened. police say two men took melissa duran from her home in henderson and held her for about 20 hours. officers located the car used in the kidnapping and traced it back to the home where melissa was found. during her abduction, police say melissa had the presence of mind to leave behind clues that would help police. she left jewelry and pieces of her clothing everywhere she was so police could track her down. she also dialed 911. >> i was being held down and i was being blindfolded. >> duran says she got the idea to leave clues behind because of the show csi. her alleged kidnappers were former employees of her father. those two are now in custody. a superior court judge in sacramento ruled yesterday that

former governor arnold schwarzenegger did not break any laws when he reduced the prison sentence of a young man as one of his final acts in office. esteban nunez is the son of former assembly speaker fabbian nunez. his sentence in a murder case was reduced from 16 years to 7 years at schwarzenegger's request. the judge called the decision to reduce the sentence repugnant, but said schwarzenegger had the authority under his executive powers. san mateo county's district attorney is joining a push for more executions at san quintin. court orders put executions on hold in california for nearly seven years over questions regarding the state's three-drug execution method. the da's effort comes two months before voters will decide whether to keep or abolish the death penalty in proposition 34. the california army national guard is holding a special ceremony in fairfield this morning. the 49th military police brigade is introducing their first female commander. colonel kelly fisher recently
